Crucial Crew

Year 6 went to Crucial Crew and had a marvellous day! We did lots of fun activities about how to keep safe. We did 10 amazing activities which everyone took part in and enjoyed. We were put into 10 groups and some of us were with another school. The fire activity was the best, but we can’t tell you what happened otherwise we will spoil the surprise when you go. In most activities we had to be with a partner. We also learnt about internet safety, the recovery position, safety at the coast and electrical safety.

D.T. - Fish Banners

As part of our topic on coasts we designed a fish appliqué - this means we cut out the shape of a fish on various coloured materials and stitched them on to another piece of fabric to form a picture. To give a 3D effect we stuffed the bodies with wadding. Our classes had lots of fun completing this work, learning how to thread needles and stitch neatly. We thank Miss Stannard and Miss Leftley for organising it for us to do.

Look at the work we did.

They look brilliant!  We hope you agree.

Quiz

Diss Rotary Club held their annual quiz competition at Roydon today.

Four schools took part - Roydon, Diss Junior, Winfarthing All Saints and Lopham St. Andrew's.

There were 8 rounds in the quiz which included questions about Children's Literature, Maths, Science, History, Geography, The Arts and General Knowledge.
At the half way stage it was very close; 3 schools were on equal points but Diss were in the lead by one.

At the end when all the points were added up the winners were...

Lopham St. Andrews - by 1 point!  Well done.

Roydon and Diss were joint second so had to go to a tie-break.  Diss were the eventual winners and will go to the final in Harleston.

It was an interesting and fun afternoon.

Drug Awareness

Today Inspector Huddlestone came in to talk to us about "Drug Awareness".

He started by introducing us to the basics names of drugs.  We had some anagram puzzles and had to work out the  name of each drug, eg cocaine, ecstasy, heroin ect. He put some pictures onto the interactive whiteboard showing the effects before and after long/short term drug abuse. It was quite shocking what had happened to some people! One person had only one nostril after snorting cannabis, as it had rotted away.
Inspector Huddlestone also told us about a few previous cases he'd dealt with, including murder cases. One teenager, after having cannabis, attacked two of his friends, brutally killing them. Later, we were shown actual drugs! Coccaine, Ecstasy, Heroin and Cannabis. And we saw a crack pipe and a Cannabis grinder.

Inspector Huddlestone  talked about drug dealers and how they target  young people, especailly when they go to high school. They often start by giving  them drugs for free to get them addicted.  Later, they expect money for them and when people can't pay for it they turn to a life of crime, maybe stealing to get the money.

Inspector Huddlestone explained that if you were caught in possession of drugs you could get a long prison sentence, anything from 3 - 14 years. If you are a dealer you can get a long sentence as well.  Sometimes even life.

We learnt that if you are charged for a drug offence, you can't get into university and it would be hard to get a job, plus there are some countries, such as America, which won't let you into the state. If a school child was found with drugs in school, they'd be excluded, police would be informed, theyd be arrrested and a receive criminal record.

Statiscally, Insp. Huddlestone said out of the 70 people in our room, 10 children would try drugs at least once. I'd like to think now that many of us have thought about this, and will remember his advice.
It was an interesting talk.

Cricket

4 teams from years 5 and 6 took part in a cricket competition at Diss High School.  It was a good chance to practise skills, and use them in a match situation.  There were some good hits and catches, and clear improvement through the afternoon.

Team 1 were the most successful, and qualified second, to represent the cluster at the next event at Great Melton on the Monday.  Here they reached the knock out stages, and were beaten in the quarter finals.  Well done to all who took part.

Southwold

On Tuesday 10th of June 2014, Miss Stannard’s and Miss Leftley’s class went to Southwold for the day. When we got there strolled past the sea wall to the beach to answer some questions in a booklet that got given to us by the teachers, Miss Leftley told us about why the sea walls had been built and how  the cliffs had been eroded back by the sea.

After that we walked back the way we came past the beach huts.  Some of the beach huts were being built, in our booklet we had to write down the 2 favourite names of the beach huts and make up a name for one of our own beach huts.

Then we walked back onto the beach the other side of what we had just been on to eat our lunch. Soon after having our lunch we were allowed to have a paddle in the sea. We were only allowed up to our knees but some ended up getting soaked by the waves that splashed up onto them. Then we all got in to our groups to get an ice – cream for £2.

We had to stay in our groups because we all had to interview some people saying “What is the purpose of your visit?” and “What facilities do you use most?” Eventually we all went into town to see what things are in Southwold. We had to fill in a tally of how many of the same shops are in Southwold. When we got back out of town we had to go onto the beach and answer what we could hear, see, smell , feel and touch.

Sadly we had to go home after a great day out. Thank you to all of the teachers, parents and helpers for talking us on an awesome day out at Southwold.

Business Day

Year 6 Business Day was a roaring success!

In the weeks following SAT's  pupils in year 6 formed themselves into companies to either sell a product or provide a service on Business Day.  Each company had 3 - 5 children in them. Once they had decided what they were going to sell or do they did some market research to find what out peoples favourite icecream flavours, milkshakes etc were.

Mrs Bradford gave each group £10 to spend on stock and when the day was over it had to be returned, along with £2 float. The groups sold items like slushies, milkshakes, popcorn, jewellery and much more. Each group then added up their total profit, chose a charity to donate it to and sent it off. The grand total for all the groups together was a whopping £553.29!

"Bands,Bracelets and More" earned a profit of £107.42!  They made hundreds of bracelets made out of rubber bands weeks before Business Day.

Lewis and Kieran washed bikes and scooters.

Lovely nail painting!

A karaoke competition was held by Sharna,Lily,Ellie,Shauna and Codie in their milkshake bar.

Yummy!! Cupcake decorating with Shannon, Isobel, Gillian and Olivia C.

Enjoying the cupcakes they had just made!

Benjamin's group sold popcorn, fizzy drinks, milkshakes and sherbert sticks!

Mmmm...  Sweet Treats made £18.35 profit.

Yum!

Besties Bar sold Milkshakes, Slushies and sweets.

An amazing French restaurant.

"Toys 4 U" sold people's unwanted things and earned over £100!

Everyone had a lot of fun on Business Day, Year 6 learnt a lot about running a business and the charities benefited from our success.
