Today Inspector Huddlestone came in to talk to us about "Drug Awareness".
He started by introducing us to the basics names of drugs. We had some anagram puzzles and had to work out the name of each drug, eg cocaine, ecstasy, heroin ect. He put some pictures onto the interactive whiteboard showing the effects before and after long/short term drug abuse. It was quite shocking what had happened to some people! One person had only one nostril after snorting cannabis, as it had rotted away.
Inspector Huddlestone also told us about a few previous cases he'd dealt with, including murder cases. One teenager, after having cannabis, attacked two of his friends, brutally killing them. Later, we were shown actual drugs! Coccaine, Ecstasy, Heroin and Cannabis. And we saw a crack pipe and a Cannabis grinder.
Inspector Huddlestone talked about drug dealers and how they target young people, especailly when they go to high school. They often start by giving them drugs for free to get them addicted. Later, they expect money for them and when people can't pay for it they turn to a life of crime, maybe stealing to get the money.
Inspector Huddlestone explained that if you were caught in possession of drugs you could get a long prison sentence, anything from 3 - 14 years. If you are a dealer you can get a long sentence as well. Sometimes even life.
We learnt that if you are charged for a drug offence, you can't get into university and it would be hard to get a job, plus there are some countries, such as America, which won't let you into the state. If a school child was found with drugs in school, they'd be excluded, police would be informed, theyd be arrrested and a receive criminal record.
Statiscally, Insp. Huddlestone said out of the 70 people in our room, 10 children would try drugs at least once. I'd like to think now that many of us have thought about this, and will remember his advice.
It was an interesting talk.
